Special Session on
Collaborative Robots and Human - Robot Interaction

Brief Description:
The presence of robotic technologies (from small unmanned ground sensors to multi-ton unmanned vehicles) and concurrent existence of research and development programs is growing in many field applications, in both civilian and military operational environments. In the near future, we anticipate that robots will be increasingly employed collaboratively to achieve common goals. The interaction among collaborative robots as well as between robots and their human operators is critical to the successful employment of robots, and, therefore, needs careful examination.
This special session on collaborative robots - to be held as part of the 2006 International Symposium on Collaborative Technologies and Systems, May 14-17, 2006, at the Luxor Hotel, Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - will focus on the areas of collaborative robotic technologies (including all unmanned vehicles, aerial, ground, etc) and human-robot-interaction. We invite original contributions from researchers in academia, research laboratories, and the computer industry on these emerging and important areas of information technology. Our goals are to provide a dedicated session that fosters closer interaction among researchers and user communities, and to provide a forum in which researchers and users can exchange their findings and ideas.

Special Session on
Collaborative Networking Infrastructure

Brief Description:
A Special Session on collaborative networking infrastructure is being organized under the 2006 Collaborative Technologies Symposium (CTS'06) to be held May 14-17, 2006, Luxor Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. This special session is planned to bring together people from industry, government and academia who are working to innovate, develop and use networking infrastructure for the purpose of collaborative work in various fields of knowledge. Some of the recent examples of collaborative work via networking include SPARC that researchers in upper atmospheric and space physics from around the world are able to use. SPARC provides the users with a set of online collaboration tools and workspaces that link together scientific instruments, data, and models. Work is in progress to design and test portable mobile collaborative networks that can be created to deal with emergencies.
This special session looks at all hardware and software issues that are involved in providing a reliable, robust and ubiquitous networking infrastructure to build collaborative tools and services and the state of the art as well as experimental results and posters about ongoing work in this direction. We invite original contributions on these emerging and important areas of information technology.

Special Session on
Logistics Collaboration Technologies: Socio-Technical Challenges

Brief Description:
Improvements in logistics system are being propelled by advances in information and networking technologies. Within governmental agencies and the military contexts, these advances are embodied in overarching concepts such as Sense and Respond Logistics (also called Distributed Adaptive Logistics), Focused Logistics, and Knowledge-Enabled Logistics. Traditional supply chain management is evolving toward demand networks in many industries and in the military logistics system. Total asset visibility provided by inexpensive sensors and ubiquitous computing are allowing much more precise control of logistics pipelines. Automated logistics planning tools for supply sourcing and transportation are examples of the modern net-centric approach to logistics. Although much remains to be done to perfect and extend these systems, the overall direction for logistics information technology is clearly marked. We are moving toward automated logistics systems organized around self-synchronizing networks. Networks will sense demand signals early and produce adaptive responses automatically. Various tools (such as intelligent agents and optimization schemes) will promote more efficient logistics support and more effective operations.
Logistics Transformation (in the DoD context, industry, or others) also highlights organizational and training factors in bringing about desired results. The Joint Futures Laboratory at Joint Forces Command is providing relevant venues for this Ą°socio-technicalĄ± research to be done in a military environment. But for the most part, the emphasis has been on building what might be termed the inside of the network, where the IT is. Yet, more research attention should fall on the network edge, where the people are. For example:
How will multi-function, multi-national logistics teams collaborate effectively in the emerging logistics Ą°infosphere?Ą± How do we design and implement network-based solutions to take better advantage of what we know about human-network operations, computer-supported cooperative work, and Ą°distributedĄ± teams? How do we capitalize on lessons learned from both IT successes and failures? How does training and doctrine have to change to accommodate the transformations we need? Are there better strategies for selecting and managing a workforce that will require greater adaptivity to better match the adaptive organizations we envision? How can dispersed teams gain and maintain a common operating picture (or shared awareness) in information rich but ambiguous situations (i.e., extracting relevant information from noise)? How do we avoid automation surprise and promote emergent trust in network-centric logistics?
We are soliciting original papers describing empirical, analytical, and conceptual approaches to these classes of problems on the human side of networked logistics. The emphasis will be on the socio-technical or human/system level to include support for logistics teamwork and decision making, coordinated planning and replanning, human-centered command and control issues, training/selection and organizational doctrine, and policy-related questions. Both civilian and military logistics applications are solicited.
