BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND MOTIVATION

Portable computing devices have recently proliferated, offering mobile computing capability anytime and anywhere. From smart phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) running embedded operating systems, to portable computers running conventional desktop operating systems, these devices have increasingly provided communication capabilities that utilize wireless connections. With those communication capabilities firmly established, the next logical step is in the direction of greater interactions between mobile users equipped with such devices. However, conventional collaborative tools are ill suited for the demands of portable computers and mobile networks, especially in situations in which no fixed-network infrastructure is present. A collaborative environment that takes into consideration the ad-hoc nature of the wireless network is needed. In this short tutorial, we discuss mobile and ad-hoc collaboration research and state of technology.

Business professionals, Collaboration Enterprise and tools developers and users, and scientists and engineers who wish to use state of the art wireless technology in collaborative systems.

PREREQUISITE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

Basic science and engineering, programming and/or business management experience.

BIOGRAPHY OF PRESENTERS

Sumi A. Helal is an Associate Professor at the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Department (CISE) at the University of Florida. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer Science and Automatic Control from Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt, in 1982 and 1985 respectively, and his Ph.D. in Computer Sciences from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1991. Before joining the University of Florida, he held academic and industrial research positions at MCC, Purdue and the University of Texas at Arlington. His broad research interests span the areas of Database Systems, Mobile and Wireless Computing, Collaborative Computing, and Internet Applications. He published over 60 articles and papers and co-authored four books, all in the areas of database systems, distributed systems, mobile computing, and workflow. Dr. Helal is the Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on the Internet (TCI) and is a member of the Executive Committees of TCI and the IEEE Technical Committee on Operating Systems and Application Environments (TCOS). He is a Senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the USENIX Association.
