CoolSim calculates the fraction of the
time that a cooling tower can supply water at or below a given target
temperature. Thus, it can be used to
estimate how often a cooling tower can provide water for a load rather than a
chiller.
CoolSim uses TMY2 weather data files and algorthims based on performance data from the ASHRAE Handbook: Systems and Equipment, 1996, pg 36.14. The performance data show the exiting water temperature as a function of ambient wet-bulb temperature and the difference between the entering and exiting water temperatures. These data were regressed to develop a relation for the leaving water temperature as a function of the entering water temperature and the ambient wet-bulb temperature for a cooling tower operating at 3 gpm/nominal ton cooling. CoolSim compares the leaving water temperature to the target leaving water temperature and reports how often the leaving water temperature is less than or equal to the target temperature.
