The Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Manufacturing Engineering Technology was initiated in 1985 under the leadership of its founding program coordinator, Professor Robert L. Wolff. From the beginning, it has been based solidly on the curriculum recommendations of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Professor Wolff has been an active participant in national program planning activities of SME. The creation of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program was in response to student interest as it was noted that the career paths of many graduates of the earlier programs led them into the manufacturing field.

The program is one of the most general of those in the Department of Engineering Technology. It contains strong major manufacturing courses throughout the four years of the program along with important aspects from the Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering Technology, and Electronic Engineering Technology programs. The program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC of ABET).
