COURSE OUTLINE

MFG 108L: Manufacturing Processes Laboratory

Credits and Contact Hrs. (Lecture/Laboratory): 1 credit hour, 3 contact hours per week.

Course Description: Application of metal-cutting theory using single-and multiple-point cutting tools, basic metal removal process of toolroom and production machines. Experience on conventional milling machines, shapers, lathes, surface grinders, and drill presses.

Prerequisites/Co-Requisites:None / None

Textbook: Kibbe, Neely, Meyer & White,, Machine Tool Practices. 5th ed. Prentice Hall, 1995.

References:

Course Coordinator: Robert L. Wolff, Program Coordinator of Manufacturing Engineering Technology.

Goals/Objectives:

  • To acquaint the student with the basic machining processes, machine tools, cutting tools, tool materials, and workpiece materials.
  • To provide experience that will acquaint the student with the effect of cutting speeds, feeds, cutting tool geometry, cutting tool materials, and coolants on surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
  • Specific Objectives:

    After completion of this course:

    • The student will have an understanding of the basic machining processes and how they integrate into Manufacturing Engineering Technology.
    • The student will have experience in using basic machine tools, reading and interpreting drawings, using micrometers and dial calipers to measure parts to precision dimension.
    • The student will have experience in preparing engineering laboratory reports and maintaining log books on their individual projects.
    • The student will have produced a machinists clamp from low carbon steel bar stock to meet the design, tolerances, and specifications provided on an engineering drawing.
    • Each laboratory session will be preceded by a lecture topic or test as indicated below. During the laboratory sessions the student will machine components for their individual assignment of producing a machinist clamp.
