Prof. Earl IselinProfessor 1970-1988
Professor Earl Iselin
initially came to the University of Dayton as an instructor in the Industrial Engineering
Technology Department in 1970. Three year later he was named Coordinator of Cooperative
Education . . . a position he held for eight years. During this period he also taught
courses in both the Industrial Engineering Technology and the Electronic Engineering
Technology programs. The Co-op program flourished under his direction and the job became
more than a half-time assignment. In 1981, he resigned as Coordinator of the Co-op program
and turned the reins over to Mr. Eldon Deardorf. Professor Iselin then became a full time
member of the Electronic Engineering Technology Faculty. In this department he directed
the aircraft component test and evaluation research project under a USAF contract and
taught a variety of electronics courses. He occasionally taught courses for other
departments as well. He particularly enjoyed the freshman classes where he worked hard to
instill the college level of performance and problem solving ability required of students
in technology.
Before joining the University,
Professor Iselin completed a 25 year career in the U.S. Navy where he served as an
Electronics Engineering Officer. During his naval career he served in several
assignments-- oceanographic research, sonar design, submarine construction, ship repair,
just to name a few! After retiring with the rank of Commander, he started work as a senior
electronics engineer with NCR Corporation in Dayton. While at NCR, he picked up the trail
of his education by enrolling in the University of Dayton, Engineering Management Program.
It was through this association that he became interested in education as a career and
resigned his position at NCR to become a full-time faculty member with the University of
Dayton.
Professor Iselins early
education includes bachelors degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette
University and Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At
UD he was awarded both the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Science in
Engineering Management degrees. He claims that one is never too old to go to school!
Retirement is something that
Professor Iselin refuses to accept. After retiring from the Navy, NCR, and UD, he
continues to be more active than ever. He now works on a part-time basis for the
Universitys Office of Continuing Education for the School of Engineering. He is a
Director of Program Development with the responsibility for organizing short courses on
various engineering topics. Professor Iselins interest in teaching is still very
evident as he volunteers much of his time for tutoring EET majors in various courses. His
dedication to the students has earned him the respect and admiration he deserves.
The EET faculty, staff, and
students still consider Professor Iselin an active member of the EET department. He very
frequently teaches courses in devices and circuits. He maintains very close ties with the
department and is always willing to get involved with academic and social activities.
Professor (Cmdr.) Iselin is an excellent sailor and loves to sail. He sponsors a sailing
party for the EET students, staff, and faculty each year at Kiser Lake Sailing Club. |
