COURSE OUTLINE
ECT 223L: Schematics and Diagrams
Credits and Contact Hrs.
(Lecture/Laboratory): 1 credit, 3 contact hours per week.
Course Description: Procedures,
standards and symbols used on electronic circuit diagrams. Introduction to schematic
capture using a CAD system. Three hours of laboratory a week.
Prerequisites: ECT 120.Understanding of
the practical concepts of AC circuits.
Co-Requisites: None.
Textbook: Baer,
Charles J.; Ottoway, John R. Electrical And Electronics Drawing. 4th
Edition McGraw Hill. 1986.
References: None
Course Coordinator: Douglas
A. Hanneman, Professor
Goals/Objectives:
To familiarize the student with electrical symbols electronic symbols and
fundamental electronic CAD drawing techniques. The general experience gained in computer
literacy in this course will pay off later in the second electronic CAD course. The
software used in this course is now Personal Designer by Computer Vision. The networked
system of Unix based Sun 386i computers allows the course to be operated without any paper
exchange between instructor and student.
Course topics and
lecture hours devoted to each topic:
Beginning CAD techniques,
introduction to menu command structure and use of a mouse. (3 hrs.)
General drawing techniques, to
include lines and circles, start work on the first drawing assignment which involve two
dimensional figures. (3 hrs.)
Three dimensional drawing, to
include multiple construction planes. (3 hrs.)
Device symbols, which involves
schematic drawings including a border, title block and standard R, C, L, and transistor
symbols. (3 hrs.)
Wiring/cabling and chassis
wiring. (3 hrs.)
Printed circuit board drawing.
(3 hrs.)
Logic diagrams. (3 hrs.)
Schematic diagrams. (3 hrs.)
Microelectronics. (3 hrs.)
Industrial controls. (3 hrs.)
Electrical power. (3 hrs.)
Architectural electrical plans.
(3 hrs.)
Data tables and graphs. (3
hrs.)
Computer usage: Students
do all work on a networked system of computers.
